How to read the stars

Stars compare vehicles of similar size and weight from the same years. A small car and a big truck with the same stars are not equally safe in a crash with each other.

What it does not cover

Not every model and year gets tested, and a rating is for the model as built, not this car's condition. Mike shows asking prices as asking prices, never as sold prices. Title and theft history: use the free NICB VINCheck, and get a pre-purchase inspection.

FAQ

Where do the ratings come from?

The NHTSA 5-Star Safety Ratings program, the same data on nhtsa.gov.

No rating came back. Is it unsafe?

No. It means NHTSA did not test that model and year. IIHS runs separate tests worth checking.
